Voyages: Sweet Hereafter Cheesecakery

Have you ever found yourself walking along Quinpool Rd and wondering about that mysterious place next to the former King’s Palace? One thing is for certain… it is not a tattoo shop. In fact, it’s the furthest thing from it, so do yourself a favour and pop inside. By the time the sweet scent hits you, it will be too late for second thoughts.

Since its opening in 2012, Sweet Hereafter Cheesecakery has been creating some of the best artisanal cheesecake around, and with over 137 flavours baked up over the years, proprietors Colin and Joanne McDougall have no plans on slowing down anytime soon.

With plush velvet seating, and edgy but charming Ed Hardy-inspired décor combined with a rotating menu that switches at least twice a day, Sweet Hereafter is the perfect option for the post-meal component of a romantic date night with your significant other. Alongside the innovative cheesecakes like Autumn Apple (somewhere between an apple pie and a cheesecake) and Candied Bacon, they also serve up hot beverages from Lunenberg-based Laughing Whale Coffee and World Tea House.

Cakes are served by the slice for $8 each, but if you’re keen on saving some for later, a whole cake will run you $27 for the 6-inch, or $40 for the 9-inch. While this may seem a little pricey, any true cheesecake lover will tell you that this is the price you must pay for cheesecake perfection. All considerations aside, it is entirely worth it.

After a long day, I am in the kind of mood where I could eat an entire cheesecake myself, so I decide that three slices will be a good start. The first one to arrive at my table, and one of their most popular items, is the Homestyle Cherry. A classic New York style cheesecake, it is made with Sweet Hereafter’s signature shortbread crust and comes topped with cherry preserves, slivered almonds and a dollop of whipped cream. In addition to the superb snap of the shortbread, the filling is silky smooth and is complimented perfectly by the fruity tang of the cherries.

Next in line is the salty-sweet Snickers Bar cheesecake. On top of a chocolate crust is a vanilla cheesecake filling loaded with crushed chocolate and snickers pieces, covered with a velvety chocolate ganache and more snickers bars, and plated with a light drizzle of liquid chocolate, caramel sauce and whipped cream. Beside the fact that there is only one slice of it on my plate (but not for long), there is nothing that could hamper this sublime moment. This right here, my friends, is a trip to cheesecake heaven.

Lastly there is the Kit Kat cheesecake. Similar to the previous slice, this one starts with a chocolate crust but this time the filling is flavoured with delicious milk chocolate instead of vanilla. Also covered with a thick layer of chocolate ganache, it is topped with pieces of Kit Kat bar, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. With five (!) elements of chocolate incorporated into it, this is the quintessential choice for anyone who is “in love with the cocoa.”

It is hard to argue with the fact that Halifax has a ton of great restaurants, but how many of them have dedicated themselves to perfecting only one dish? It is their commitment to quality and dedication to continuous improvement that sets Sweet Hereafter apart from the rest. Each cheesecake is lovingly handmade with fresh, local ingredients done right (and they even offer vegan options.) If you are searching for the perfect date spot, are craving something sweet, or are looking for a unique gift, then take a trip to Quinpool Road and find your Sweet Hereafter today.
