It’s 10 AM on a Saturday, and as I pull up to the Halifax Quiznos — located in Bayer’s Lake shopping district and nestled between stretches of retail stores and restaurants — morning errand-runners bustle about the parking lots. Upon walking through the glass doors, brightly coloured walls and mouth-watering posters advertising Quiznos’ current specials are the first greeting, instantly piquing my appetite for their famous toasted sandwiches. However, today I’ve been invited here for a very specific reason: to serve as an official taste-tester for the new, limited-time-only line of Gyro (pronounced ‘yeer-oh’) sandwiches.
To pull together this Greek-inspired dish, Quiznos has partnered up with Kronos Foods, a specialty manufacturer of authentic Mediterranean-inspired cuisine (think Greek yogurt, pita bread, baklava, spanakopita, etc.). Prepared the traditional way, their savoury meats are slow-roasted for five hours on an open, vertical spit before being carved into classic gyro slices and served up Quiznos style, with fresh veggies and tzatziki sauce on browned, crispy bread.
To fully appreciate Quiznos’ take on this legendary Greek-inspired classic, I order both the Gyro Sub and the Gyro Wrap. As I select a drink and side dish (opting for a Fanta and a broccoli cheddar soup), the staff immediately get started by collecting a generous portion of thinly-sliced, zesty beef and lamb gyro meat and piling it on both a warm and crispy whole wheat wrap and a 12-inch loaf of sesame bread, combined with staple ingredients of the Greek dish.
My first few bites of the Gyro sub are very soon followed by my final gulp, and I am left entirely satisfied without any inkling of that heavy belly sensation you so often get from typical fast food. I note the perfectly crafted balance of deeply seasoned tender strips of meat, stacked with light accents from the cucumber and yogurt-based sauce, juicy tomatoes, and crunchy lettuce between fluffy baked and toasted sesame bread. The whole wheat wrap delivers an equally satisfying blast of Mediterranean flavour, without packing the extra calories of a sandwich bun.
For less than $10, you can bite into a portal to Greece at any Canadian Quiznos location until 2018. We recommend trying out the classic gyro on a sub or wrap, both of which come packed with authentically prepared beef and lamb, fresh lettuce, sliced tomato, and a slathering of tzatziki sauce. And if you’re feeling extra bold, try adding banana peppers or crumbled feta to your order.
*On October 25th, Quiznos Canada kicked off their gyro lineup with the chance to try a wrap or sub for free with any purchase. Now available across Canada until the new year, there is still time to get in on the action, and to make things even better, The Starving Sailor is giving away two $30.00 gift cards to our hungriest followers!
